25 Sep 2024A Special Heritage Day Celebration for Mahlaku Itireleng, Showcasing Traditional Cuisine, Attire, and Performances.
Today, at Mabatlane Community Hall, the elderly from Mahlaku Itireleng Elderly Day Care Centre celebrated Heritage Day in style, coming together to enjoy traditional cuisine, showcase cultural attire, and experience captivating performances.
Supported by stakeholders from various departments, including the Correctional Services, Social Development and South African Police Services (SAPS), the event was a collaborative effort to create a memorable experience for the elderly. It also served as a platform to spread important messages about fighting crime, ending gender-based violence (GBV), and encouraging the community to work together for a safer, crime-free environment.
The event served as an opportunity for motivation from one of the elders, Mrs. Rebecca Molebalwa, who participated at various levels and won medals in the game of Juskei as part of the Golden Games.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Molebalwa missed some of the games due to illness, but she remains eager to play and encourages her fellow elders to be more active, especially those who are at home. “The elders who live at home have seen what I have done before, so that tomorrow they will do the same in the future,” said Mrs. Rebecca Molebalwa.
As part of the celebration, the elderly were encouraged to pass on the importance of our heritage and cultural practices to the younger generation. Regardless of tribe or customs, preserving these traditions was emphasized to ensure they continue to thrive.
A variety of dishes were served, including Mopani worms, mogodu, and morogo, while performances by both the elderly and officials added vibrant color to the event, creating a true celebration of culture and community.
